Silence of the Desert

While staying in the Sahara over new year I would go out alone for walks deeper into the desert, climbing dune after dune to immerse myself in the deep silence of the desert. While walking, the only sound I would hear would be my steps in the sand, and every time I stopped, the whole world would stop and dissolve into the vastness of that profound silence.

A few times I had the idea of playing some music in that vast space but I found myself giving up on the idea after only a few notes, preferring to listen to the silence. At times the silence in the desert feels like a Presence, so full and palpable, so all-encompassing that nothing needs to be added to it. Sometimes the most musical thing to do is to just be still and listen.

'When I am silent, I fall into the place where everything is music.'

- Jalaluddin Rumi
